My Opinions |

This is a book that is very well written and fun to
read. Even though this book was required for me to read and
do a project on, it kept me interested and wanting to know
what happened next. Erich Maria Remarque did a great job with this piece of work.
One complaint of mine came at the end of the story. I expected
the narrator, Paul Baümer, to survive and be able to
tell it to his children and grandchildren. His death, no matter how disturbing, did
allow him to finally escape the torturing war that had taken the lives of so many, if not
all, of his friends. The look of calm on his face proved that he welcomed death with
open arms.
A follow-up on Paul's friends that did survive the war would also have
been been nice at the end of the story. For example, Kropp
had his leg amputated; did he kill himself like he said he was going to, or did he live
the rest of his life. And if he did live was it a happy life or one of misery?
